Based in Chicago, trumpeter Ian Torres's music blurs the line between composition and improvisation. From 2008 to 2014, he led the acclaimed Ian Torres Big Band, a 17-piece ensemble performing his original works and releasing the album January in 2013. His upcoming release, Comprovisation, builds on that legacy with a fresh take on modern jazz production — blending horn lines, synth bass, keys, and reimagined drum samples. The music is crafted at Sótano Creativo Studios, Torres’ own basement workshop where raw ideas are recorded and molded into sound.

Comprovisation is an exploration of the meeting point between composition and improvisation, where structured melodies collide with spontaneous energy. Built from a foundation of live trumpet, keyboards, and synth bass layered over reworked drum samples, the album creates a unique soundscape that is both rooted in jazz tradition and forward-looking in its production. Each track reflects Torres’ vision of reshaping familiar jazz elements into something new and unexpected.

“Subtle electronics and doublings reinforce the stimulating sonic fabric, followed by Torres delivering an enticing solo where the shadow of Dave Douglas appears. The piece ends with a Davis sample belonging to an interview conducted in 1986. As Torres himself tells us: "I've always loved and respected Miles's constant sense of change he displayed throughout his entire lengthy career—his refusal to repeat himself and his commitment to always evolving." There is no doubt that he is also applying these brave musical principles to himself.” - Artur Moral
